Oeno P Santorini Assyrtiko 'Tria Ampelia' 2020
Paris Sigalas is a legendary winemaker on Santorini. The basic Sigalas Assyrtiko is perhaps the island's best-known wine, and some of the top single vineyard bottlings are among the finest. In 2020 Paris sold the Sigalas label, but instead of enjoying a well-earned retirement he has started a new project, Oeno P. This is a new winery built on the site of the original family canava where the original Sigalas venture began. Having done it all with Sigalas, Oeno P is solely about producing the very best of the best. Everything is done with an uncompromising focus on quality. All of Paris' experience and skill is going into the wine, and the results are outstanding.
Tria Ampelia is the first Santorini Assyrtiko to be fermented and aged entirely in amphorae. The fruit from various old vineyards is vinified separately, and matured on the lees for 16 months. It is a wine of extraordinary subtlety. It is powerful, but it wears its intensity lightly. The finish is remarkably long, with a lovely stony minerality that comes from its ageing in amphorae. It is clearly designed to age further in bottle, but is already a beautiful wine on release.
