If you've been lucky enough to drink Assyrtiko from Santorini for a while, you'll know it's world-class wine. You may also have noticed that prices have risen as the wine world has caught on. Fortunately, your everyday Assyrtiko needs can still be catered for - but you're going to have to look elsewhere. Lyrarakis on Crete are a brilliant winery with a focus on indigenous Greek varieties, and their 'Voila' is for our money the best value Assyrtiko out there. The fruit comes from the Voila area around Sitia in eastern Crete. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermentation takes place in stainless steel with a little skin contact. The finished wine has all the classic citrus character of Assyrtiko, a refined texture and truly impressive complexity.
