Thymiopoulos Xinomavro Jeunes Vignes 2021
Apostolos Thymiopoulos is Greece's greatest red winemaker, a master of the Xinomavro grape variety. Jeunes Vignes is his entry level wine, and surely one of the wine world's greatest bargains. A blend of various parcels of young(er) vine Xinomavro, Jeunes Vignes is feremented in stainless steel and aged in concrete vats for eight months. When we first started selling it, the wine was simple, juicy and light (but always delicious). With each subsequent vintage it has become increasingly complex. It's still a joy to drink, but there is remarkable depth there, with fine, silky tannins, gorgeous fruit and great freshness all coming together in a wine of perfect balance. For the price, it is extraordinary.
Gently dusty mineral note over the subtle, pure red fruit. Firmly tannic. Super-fresh. A wine for people to discover this variety. Firmer tannins than in earlier vintages, it seems to me. Firm and dry but with the right depth of fruit to balance. So moreish and with terrific intensity – masses of Xinomavro character thanks to longer extraction. Good value for an entry-level wine of this quality.17 points
