Orange wine is big in Slovenia, and Vina Čotar's Malvazija is a great place to start exploring. The skins are left in contact with the wine to give it both an orange tinge, more flavour and a dose of tannin. The finished wine is gloriously, eccentrically different, with a nutty, slightly sour grapefruit flavour and the structure to age for years.
The Kras farm is 5km from the sea in the village of Gorjansko, spread across 7.5 hectares. Fermented in barrels of mixed sizes, with extended skin contact. Aged in old oak barrels for a minimum of two years. Unfiltered.
