Olga Raffault 2014 Chinon Les Picasses
When Olga Raffault's husband died suddenly in 1947, she was determined to complete the vintage and turned for help to Ernest Zenninger, a former German prisoner of war who had found work at the winery after the war ended. Ernest went on to become the winemaker at Domaine Olga Raffault for decades, working alongside Olga's son Jean, until eventually it passed on to the next generation. Sylvie and her husband Eric continued the traditions established by their predecessors, and the wines are beautiful, pure and authentic examples of Chinon, capable of ageing for many, many years. The Picasses vineyard is one of the best in Chinon. The wine is fermented naturally and then aged in both barrel and bottle before it is deemed ready for release. Full-bodied with a peppery edge, it is a wine of amazing quality and heritage, worth seeking out.
South-facing slope of clay over porous limestone. Aged 1-2 years in 30hl barrels.
