Mutiliana Romagna Sangiovese Modigliana 'Acereta' 2018

Giorgio Melandri is a wine writer turned producer. His previous role as the regional editor for Gambero Rosso gave him a knowledge of the wines of Emilia Romagna that is unrivalled, and also convinced him of the unique qualities of Sangiovese grown around the ancient town of Modigliana. Here three valleys, Ibola, Tramazzo and Acerreta, produce Sangiovese wines with their own distinct characteristics, in a style that stands apart from the better known wines of Chianti and Brunello in Tuscany. The wines have a lovely freshness together with ripe, bright fruit. The Mutiliana cuvée is fermented with wild yeasts in concrete, in which it is also aged. A gorgeous wine from a unique and under-appreciated area.
Lustrous deep ruby. A beautifully pure nose of dark cherry and raspberry with a subtle layer of saline mineral notes. Succulent, dark, sour cherry on the palate. Great length and lots of concentrated, tangy, dark fruit on the finish and with finely ground tannins. Much fuller than its stated 13% alcohol suggests. This is a gorgeous wine that is stylistically akin neither to Chianti Classico nor to Brunello, but is very much Modigliana.
