Amongst the new world of producers of fine, Burgundy-beating Beaujolais, Foillard is right at the top of the tree. Morgon has become the pre-eminent Beaujolais Cru, largely thanks to modern classic wines like Côte du Py. The winemaking process sounds like simplicity in itself - there is very little messing around and the only oak influence is nine months in used barrels - but the wine is remarkable. So pure, multi-dimensional and poised, it is easily the equal of many a more illustrious wine from further north. This is almost impossible to resist drinking immediately, but it could certainly be cellared for many years.
Hand-harvested. Traditional, whole-cluster fermentation without sulphur. Aged 6-9 months in used oak barrels. Unfiltered.
