Charvin have only been bottling their own wines since the 1990s, although the domaine has been in the family since 1851. They are now one of the best producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, making beautifully balanced, ageworthy, terroir-driven wines. Their red Côtes-du-Rhône is wonderful value. Made in almost exactly the same way as the Châteauneuf, it comes from 40 year old vines, farmed oganically, and is aged in concrete vats for 16 to 18 months. It has amazing poise, with gorgous red fruit that blazes through, backed up by finely judged tannins and moreish freshness. Utterly delicious on release, it could also be cellared. It is outstanding value for money.
