Valtellina is the other great Nebbiolo wine. Everyone has heard of Barolo and Barbaresco, but Valtellina is still relatively under-appreciated. It's much further north of course. So far north that it is up in the Alps, practically on the Swiss border. Here the vineyards are sheer granite. To maintain them is a gruelling exercise, with everything done by hand under the baking sun. ARPEPE are masterful, old-school Valtellina producers and this wine is possibly their best. It's from a single vineyard site in the heart of the best part of Valtellina. Made slowly and gently, with periods of ageing in old chestnut barrels, concrete vats and bottle, it is released only after many years when it is finally ready to drink.
350-400m up in the alps near the Swiss border. Sheer, south-facing granite slopes, 50 year old vines. Aged in a mix of chestnut casks, concrete and bottle before release.
