Anatolikos 2018 Natural Orange WineRegular price £46
Anatolikos' Natural Orange Wine might look and sound like a risk, but actually get it into a glass and taste it and you'll soon discover it is fundamentally just an enormously enjoyable, delicious drink. With aromas of bitter orange and apple it has a nice dry texture and a refreshing sour quality with fine, subtle tannins. It could age well, but it's so delicious now - why wait?
Mid gold with a few bubbles of CO2 visible. Intense aroma of bitter orange, quince and fresh apple but without any impression of sweetness on the nose. There is a very slight spritz that gives a brightness to this tannic but not astringent wine. Lovely depth of orange, apricot and ripe apple flavours on the palate, with nicely dry texture. Tannins are much less marked than I expected and it has excellent freshness. Good length too. The overall effect is deliciously sour and refreshing. I think this should age well but I haven't tasted an example with bottle age – and not sure why you would want to keep it as the fruit is vibrant now. I can't taste the very slight sweetness here – as I see I did when I tasted the 2016 – it seems to just balance the tannins and acid very well. it reminds me of artisanal apple juice made from some traditional variety like Egremont Russet.
