Markou Vineyards 2018 Shinopefko RetsinaRegular price £12.95
The Markos brothers who now run Markou Vineyards are the latest in a family line of winemakers stretching back 150 years. Shinopefko Retsina harks back to an even earlier time, long before industrial winemaking erased the subtleties of this ancient wine style. This is a top quality Retsina. The Savatiano grape from which it is made has traditionally been used only for blending wines in bulk, but here from 60 year old vines its subtle qualities shine through. During fermentation pine resin is added wrapped in cotton gauze, and later removed. The finished wine is a complex, delicate white that is wonderful value for money.
Intense aromas of pine and rosemary, matched by those flavours on the palate. But really quite delicate and very fresh. Modern retsina with a slight grip in the texture and freshly herbal.
