Chateau Musar's white wine is much less widely-known and appreciated than their red. Perhaps it's because it's completely unique and quite difficult to get your head around - the best description anyone has come up with is 'like a dry Sauternes'. For those of us who love it, it is a remarkable, uniquely complex and long-lived white. Made from two ancient native Lebanese varieties, it is aged for years in the Musar cellars before release, and can live for decades.
Chateau Musar White
65% Obaideh, 35% Merwah
Lebanon > Bekaa Valley
1200m up the seaward-facing slopes of Mount Lebanon and the foothills of Anti-Lebanon. Ungrafted vines planted between 50 and 90 years ago.
Organic. Hand-harvested by local Bedouins.
Fermented and aged partly in oak barrels for 9 months and partly in stainless steel vats. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, then aged for a further six years in the Musar cellars before release.
Can be drunk on release, but can live for decades. The cellars at Chateau Musar hold bottles of their white wine back to the 1950s and they are still going strong.
