Apostolos Thymiopoulos has a very strong claim to be the world's best producer of Xinomavro. He makes ten different expressions of this great Greek grape, and it’s not unlikely that the number will continue to grow. Kayafas is one of the single plot wines that mark the pinnacle of his acheivements. It is made from a vineyard planted nearly fifty years ago near Trilofos, and is an inspiring wine of truly remarkable depth and complexity.
Transparent ruby. Warm, rich nose with beautiful rose-scented freshness. Neat and clean with a gravelly textured undertow. Hugely appetising yet with a beguiling sweetness that makes this wine almost irresistible already. Love the sucky-stony finish but it's far from austere. A real charmer with sufficient very fine tannin to imply long ageing. But it's already gorgeous!17 points
