Barbacarlo 1990 Montebuono
Regular price £47Somewhere outside Broni, Lombardy, about 30 miles south of Milan, four hectares of vineyard cling to a very steep slope, surrounded by forest. This is Barbacarlo, a vineyard whose wines have been made by the Maga family since 1886. Two wines are made, from different sections of the vineyard. One is simply 'Barbacarlo', and the other 'Montebuono', from a part of the vineyard where the slope is a little less extreme. This is seriously old-school winemaking. The blend is made up of various local varieties, and the wines are fermented in very old, open casks, then bottled unfiltered. These ageworthy, wild wines are unique, authentic and complex. There is very little mature Barbacarlo left now. Try it while you still can.
