Aoton 2017 'Seventeen'
- 3 in stock
Aoton make some of Attica's best wines from just under two hectares of organically farmed vineyards planted in the mid 1990's. Savatiano is the traditional grape of this region and the classic base for Retsina, but here it is blended with 30% Roditis and used to make a regular dry white. This is honeyed and golden, rich yet with lovely freshness. A complex, ageworthy Greek white.
Pale gold. Riper-smelling than the straight Savatiano, yellow plums and almost honeyed spice though without sweetness. In fact the spice adds a sort of savoury quality here. There's apricot and ripe lemon too. Fills the mouth with golden, honeyed plums and yet still so vibrant and fresh. A very individual and highly accomplished style that is both rich and fresh and with good length. You could spend an evening with this wine and find so many nuances, both with and without food. The straight Aoton Savatiano has the edge in freshness but this blend is almost as good. Apparently they made this blend just this year (hence the name 17) because they had so little Roditis they could not make a 100% Roditis wine.
