Antonio Vallana e Figlio 2015 Spanna Colline NovaresiRegular price £21
About 100 miles northeast of Barolo is Maggiora, home to the Vallana wine estate since 1937. This is Alto Piemonte, where the local grape, Spanna (otherwise known as Nebbiolo), has been grown for generations. Vallana have five hectares of vineyards all planted on steep, wooded hillsides that must be harvested by hand. Their Colline Novaresi is old-school Nebbiolo in the best possible sense. Blended with a small amount of Vespolina (for freshness) and aged in traditional, large oak barrels, it is a wine that demands at least five years of age behind it. Packed with concentrated dark cherry flavours and with fine tannins, it is an authentic, food-friendly wine - a very fine and still undervalued example of traditional Nebbiolo.
Mid ruby with orange tinges. Gorgeous, fine, spicy Nebbiolo nose. Succulent palate but much more embryonic than the nose would have it. Very tightly wound and with lots of powdery tannins
