Nikos Douloufakis is one of the best and most interesting winemakers in Crete, itself a hotbed of innovation and the source of many of Greece's most exciting wine bargains. His Dafnios wines are some of the most enjoyable we've come across in the sub-£20 bracket. A red and a white made to showcase two of Crete's native grape varieties, they overdeliver splendidly. If you're looking for interesting, food-friendly wines to see you through the autumn, you should stock up on some of these - both ready to go now.
Douloufakis Dafnios Liatiko 2019
The Dafnios Liatiko is a dry red wine with a remarkably evolved earthy complexity. It has plenty of fresh red fruit, but a top layer of leather and spice, a savoury edge and fine tannins.
Doulofakis Dafnios Vidiano 2020
The Dafnios Liatiko is almost Viognier-like, with a floral, peachy aroma. On the palate it's dry, with great intensity and a crisp freshness.
This pair are probably the best introduction to Cretan wine you could hope for.
