In the heart of the Naoussa appellation, Domaine Dalamara make some of Greece's best red wines. Their flagship is the 'Paliokalias' bottling, a single vineyard Xinomavro made from old vines. But it is only produced in years when the weather delivers the high levels of concentration demanded by the style. In lighter years, such as 2018, their plainly titled 'Naoussa' wine gets all the attention and the best fruit.
We will have to wait another year for the next release of Paliokalias, but no matter - the 2018 Naoussa, arriving shortly, is a beautiful wine in its own right. It is roughly half the price of Paliokalias and has about half the extraction time. As a result it is less dense and more immediately approachable, with an enchanting, floral aroma and perfect balance. This is a wine to enjoy in the winter, with suitably hearty food - a worthy challenger to fine Barolo or Barbaresco.
